Tribute Resolution

Tribute Resolution Dedicated to the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS)
of the
Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL),
a division of the American Library Association (ALA),
on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of RBMS

Whereas, The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) has promoted the wider understanding of the value of rare books, manuscripts and archival materials for research, teaching, learning, and cultural memory, and has represented librarians, archivists, and related specialists concerned with the care, promotion, preservation, and security of special collections, including rare books, manuscripts, archives, music, ephemera, and graphic materials since 1958, when the RBMS was established as an ACRL Section; and
Whereas, RBMS has provided its members with a means of communication, interaction, and professional development via publications, programs, meetings, and conferences since the establishment of the RBMS Preconference in 1959; and
Whereas, RBMS has promoted opportunities for continuing education in subjects of value to rare book and manuscript librarians and archivists by assessing member needs and developing and disseminating appropriate programs; and
Whereas, RBMS has contributed to the description, accessibility, preservation, and security of rare and unique materials through the development and publication of standards and guidelines benefiting librarians, archivists, and scholars throughout the rare book and manuscript library and archival communities; and
Whereas, RBMS has promoted the visibility and accessibility of rare and unique materials through the development of guidelines facilitating such services as interlibrary loan for patron use and institutional borrowing for exhibition; and
Whereas, RBMS has contributed to scholarly research by assisting librarians, archivists and related specialists with serving the needs of users of primary source and other special collection materials; and
Whereas, RBMS has contributed to professional dialogue and research through RBM: A Journal of Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Cultural Heritage (formerly Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship, RBML); and
Whereas, RBMS has celebrated and fostered excellence in the promotion of library exhibition publications through the annual Katharine Kyes Leab & Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Awards; and
Whereas, RBMS continues to promote diversity in the profession and awareness of the diversity of collections and patrons, and to actively support their varied interests and needs; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the American Library Association salutes the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it further
Resolved, That the American Library Association commends the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section for 50 years of excellence in promoting the value of rare books, manuscripts, and special collections, and providing leadership to the special collections library profession.
