Tribute Resolution

The Bibliographical Society of America Tribute Resolution to the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), on the occasion of the 50th RBMS Preconference to be held in Charlottesville, Virginia June 17-20, 2009

Whereas, the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) plays a leading role in the local, national, and international special collections communities; and
Whereas, RBMS has successfully promoted recognition of the importance of rare books, manuscripts, and archival materials for scholarly investigation, education, and cultural heritage; and
Whereas, RBMS promotes the interests of librarians, archivists, and other specialists concerned with the acquisition, organization, security, preservation, use, and administration of special collections, including printed books, manuscripts, archives, graphic materials, music, and ephemera; and
Whereas, RBMS defines, develops, and disseminates nationally and internationally recognized standards and guidelines that contribute to improved description, access, promotion, preservation, and security of rare and unique special collections materials and that benefit bibliographers, other scholars, librarians, and archivists; and
Whereas, RBMS has advanced numerous aspects of special collections through the publication since 1986 of Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship, RBML, succeeded in 2000 by RBM: A Journal of Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Cultural Heritage; and
Whereas, RBMS since 1986 has promoted outstanding exhibitions and exhibition publications by means of the annual Katherine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab American Book Prices Current Exhibition Awards; and
Whereas, RBMS has provided its members and others with high quality programming and a productive and amenable venue for professional development since the first RBMS Preconference in 1959; now, therefore, be it
Resolved that The Bibliographical Society of America pays tribute to RBMS on the occasion of its 50th Preconference; and, be it further
Resolved that The Bibliographical Society of America recognizes RBMS for successfully promoting the scholarly and cultural value of rare books, manuscripts, archives, and special collections, and for providing leadership to the local, national, and international special collections communities.
